Tertiary training of Industrial Engineers in being delivered at the moment by two universities in Australia:

Curtin University, WA

Two Streams
1. BEng in Industrial and Systems Engineering
2. Optional further study – MSc in Industrial Engineering

Curtin’s undergraduate course gives students an opportunity to develop and apply engineering and mathematical knowledge to analyse, design, improve and optimise engineering, managerial, operational and physical systems.

The course focuses on selected areas of practical importance, comprising compulsory core taught units, which are:
– mechanical design
– dynamics and control
– manufacturing
– management
– operations research
– quality and statistics, and
– supply chain.

Responding faster to new developments and changes in industry is necessity. Therefore, the major offers elective taught units. The units provide students with choices of learning network optimization, machine learning, finite-element modelling, data security and planning and management.
The major also offers an internship and final-year research projects. They are designed for collaboration with local companies.
Students can work with school staff members and industry professionals to solve a range of problems arising in, for example, additive manufacturing, failure modes and effect analysis, hands-on elements (tradecraft awareness), contracting cascade, lifecycle costs and supply chain layers.

University of Melbourne, VIC

The University of Melbourne is offering a post graduate Master of Industrial Engineering degree (by course work) where students will learn and develop experience applying a systematic approach to transform designs and concepts into tangible products and services through a wide range of industrial systems. Industrial engineers ensure a company’s competitiveness from design and production to business strategy by maximising efficiency and effectiveness in the organisation. They look at how to improve processes or design things that are more efficient and waste less money, time, resources and energy while meeting customer needs and regulatory obligations.

Graduates will develop a comprehensive engineering and business skillset in manufacturing technologies, system and simulation and advanced manufacturing and operations techniques, and business management.

Industry aligned curriculum

You will gain experience through real-world projects and an industry aligned curriculum to consolidate your theoretical knowledge. You will be prepared for a career in a wide range of industries from manufacturing and processing to healthcare systems, banking and consulting.

The Master of Industrial Engineering will give you advanced knowledge and skills in:

  • Manufacturing processes and technology
  • Manufacturing automation and IT
  • Industrial systems and simulation
  • Sustainable and life cycle engineering
  • Industry digital transformation and optimization
  • Business and operations management

You’ll undertake industry, design and optimisation projects and gain the skills and knowledge to practice as a professional engineer.

Entry requirements

To be considered for entry, applicants must have completed:

  • 3-year undergraduate degree in any engineering system major with a weighted average mark of at least H3 (65%) or equivalent, or
  • 4-year Bachelor of Engineering degree or equivalent with a weighted average mark of at least H3 (65%) or equivalent

We designed this course to offer future industrial engineers the comprehensive knowledge and tools to design and produce, and to understand how to operate and manage. These skills are applicable to a wide range of industries. The course consists of a mix of traditional and new subjects covering digital manufacturing, data analysis, sustainable engineering and life cycle approaches, complemented by business subjects. Theoretical learning is reinforced with hands on practice through a structure of knowledge development, hands on experience and industrial grounding. (Wen Li, Course Coordinator)
